Home team advantage in the English Premiership League and the National Hockey League

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine if there is a difference between the home advantage in the English Premiership League and the National Hockey League. The results of multiple seasons were retrieved from the respective league websites and analyzed according to previous research. It was found that while both leagues had what is considered to be a significant home team advantage by most researchers only the English Premiership League was actually significantly different from chance when a Chi squared test was performed. The English Premiership League had a larger percentage than that found in the National Hockey League. We determine that the largest difference between the two leagues is crowd effect and that this is the most likely the reason for the difference in HA percentage. Future research should look into what specific aspect of crowd effect is the biggest root of the discrepancy.
