Challenging understandings of disability through reverse integration in wheelchair basketball

Abstract

Reverse integration in wheelchair basketball, a context where athletes with and without disability compete together, has provided a valuable opportunity to explore and challenge assumptions and understandings of disability. Interviews with nine female wheelchair basketball players who experience disability and compete in reverse integration, unearthed the question and overarching theme of this study, "What's the difference?" The subthemes of: 1. Athletic identities vs. disability identities, 2. Same team, different roles? and, 3. Outside looking in,illustrated how assumed differences tied to disability were reinforced and challenged within this sporting context. Underpinning this study was a unique collaboration between the authors, who had different philosophical worldviews and disciplinary training, as well distinct differences in their connection to the topic and participants in this study. Implications for sport, disability and collaborative research will be discussed.
