From Concept to Reality: The Design and Development of a Virtual Community of Practice for Diabetes Prevention Program Coaches

Abstract

Small Steps for Big Changes (SSBC) is a diabetes prevention program designed to enable lasting diet and physical activity changes in individuals with prediabetes. Currently, SSBC coaches complete online certification requirements. After certification, there are limited opportunities for additional training. Virtual Communities of Practice (VCoPs) are online communities designed to connect individuals with shared interests to create or enhance knowledge. Ensuring a VCoP has the appropriate infrastructure and design is crucial to meet the needs of its members and sustain use. The SSBC VCoP was created in alignment with the five-phase ADDIE model, encompassing analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. This project aims to outline the phases of analysis, design, and development for the SSBC Coach VCoP. Interview data from a previous project was utilized. Current SSBC coaches shared insights on how they connect with other coaches and suggestions for additional training. Informed by the recommendations, the research team generated the VCoP objectives, website design, site rules and expectations, learning activities and engagement strategies. Coaches expressed their desire to practice Motivational Interviewing skills and learn from more experienced coaches. A login- protected, forum-style VCoP comprised of nine categories ranging from weekly case studies to advice threads was developed. Coaches can create personal profiles, new posts, share resources and interact with other users through likes and comments. Incorporating end-users' input and a structured approach was important to ensure the VCoP was designed to promote ongoing engagement.
